There’s a big summer trip to Italy on my horizon, which means modern Italian cinema is going full ham in our house right now. J has lately made me filter through And While We Were Here (depressing but Naples is so beautiful), I Am Love (depressing but Milan is so beautiful), and The Tourist (only depressing because I’m not physically in Venice).
Italian style, or at least Italian Summer style inspo is limitless, and runs heavily through all these movies. But The Tourist is striking because it’s just SO silly and over the top. Everyone knows it’s not actually stylish style—it’s a camp version of a “stylish” movie—but that’s what makes it so fun. There’s a different piece of flash jewelry coming from Angelina Jolie (Elise) in every other scene and the fantastical attention to detail is just.so.fun.
So crack your windows to catch those spring breezes coming through and mix up an Amante spritz aperitivo. My Brilliant Friend, Autumn Whitehurst (see what I did there—more on-location Italian cultural references) illustrated their ad last year. This edition of Don’t Believe Me Just Watch is all about Angelina Jolie’s gems, plus some minor Depp, throwing us back to days past of pearls, platinum, diamonds, citrine—a master class in all the classics.

Classic gold clips. These are an everyday statement—something you can throw on to head out for a meeting, for dinner, or to meet a stranger on a train.
David Webb Swirl Earrings $13,000

Elise’s Janus charm, gifted by her mother as a reminder that people have two sides, is a keystone Easter egg for the whole movie. Foundrae’s Wholeness charm—two snakes intertwined in an eternal ouroboros—captures a similar message of duality, but with a bit of a different meaning. It’s also one of my favorite pieces they make.
Foundrae - Sealed Gemstone Charm $1,600
Elise’s Kent watch is a surprising choice. It’s cute enough, but given it’s very affordable and not hard to find, I would like to see her in an upgrade along the lines of this Patek. Bonus points for a glove with a watch-viewing window.
Patek Philippe Yellow Gold Ladies Bracelet Ellipse ref. 4151/1J
These were a bit harder to figure out. They appear to be two-part earrings, with cascading diamonds down the front and an earring back featuring a small eave of diamonds that wraps around the side. I love to use an earring back as a way to continue the ear party, however I am a little afraid of the weight of this pair. Your ears are going to hurt after a few hours, but I guess the sparkle of good diamonds can make up for a lot of pain. Comping this exact style proved to be a challenge, but I like these for general design.
Harry Winston Platinum and Diamond Ear Clips - $195,000.
Unsigned Waterfall Earrings - $45,000
Our leading man wears a big ol’ cabochon gem (shaped and polished, not faceted). The right ring finger is one of the best fingers for a ring, IMHO. It’s the second smallest finger and protected on either side, which means you can sport a nice stone and wear something with a bit more flash, while still keeping it all in proportion. Frank’s looks to be a star sapphire, from the grey-blueness, the cloudiness, and the fact that when the light hits it right, you can literally see the star shine through. This seems like something that would appeal to both a math teacher, and an international man of mystery, or both. (Plus some great signets.)
Vintage 18k GIA Certified No Heat Ceylon Star Sapphire and Diamond Flush Mount Ring
State Property Spade Warisan Diamond Signet Ring - $2,330
Briony Raymond - Custom Diamond Initial Ring $12,500
If you made it this far in the post—congrats! You earned a gift. At one of my dealers the other day, I found this post-consumer Chivor Emerald (5ct)—a perfect stone. It’s dying to be part of your collection, I’m dying to design a substantial (as in girthy, important) custom ring commission. (www.danielwisner.com)
Let’s talk about a design for you (or whatever you want, really), and I’ll gift you the hand-held, white-glove shopping, resourcing, and design experience of your dreams—at friends and family pricing. (More on that experience to come.) DM!
Asprey Pearls. Perfect, of course, and easy enough to find, plus options.
Star Cap Pearl Foundation Necklace - $14,500
This Harwell Godfrey strand isn’t just beautiful pearls—it’s designed to be a base you can build on. Charms, a big emerald—it all depends on your personal level of extravagance.
Unsigned Natural Saltwater Button Pearl and Diamond Necklace $125,000
Asprey supplied these wrapped citrine and diamond earrings. No subs here–they’re so good the only answer is the real thing. (They only make one pair of each, try these in tanzanite and diamonds.)
Ribbon Earrings in 18ct White Gold with Tanzanite and Diamonds - $33,600
Fun fact: this set was originally an old tiara. Jeweler Robert Prokop remade it into a stunning necklace, which went on to become the first piece in Angelina Jolie’s charity jewelry collection. (The collection is still actively sold—proceeds go to the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict.)
The real thing is estimated to be worth $2.5 million. In lieu of that, here’s something equally spectacular—and maybe a touch more modern—if you’re looking to rearrange your portfolio.
